So far, Internship has been great. I am starting to feel comfortable with my job here and I am getting to know all of my coworkers really well. This internship requires a lot of social skills and communication. I am always around my fellow co workers and I often need their help in order to complete my project. I had to propose my project to the director and the head of nursing, so I made a presentation. I realized that HTHNC has taught me valuable presentation skills and professionalism. The directors were very impressed by my presentation and I was very proud. I have learned a lot about my organization. I have learned that it is very very important to make good relationships with all of the residents. Their trust in us is of the utmost importance. I am developing patience. In this work field, you have to be very patient in order to listen to residents.

Honestly, I do not think my first day could have gone any worse. The whole day was just a fiasco of confusion, anger, and tears. I started the day with a positive attitude and a starbucks. When I arrived, I easily found my mentor and we got right to work. I was having the time of my life saying good morning to all of the residents and talking to them about my school and asking them how their day was as Teri the nurse passed out all of the medications and supplements. I was learning so much within the first two hours when the director of the facility walked up to Teri the nurse and asked to chat about me. She had a concern about HIPPA (a law about patient privacy) and she did not want me going into the patients rooms. This was a challenge for me because I want to learn about nursing and if I could not shadow a nurse, I don't know hat I would do. I was so stressed out and frustrated that I started crying and was unable to speak to anyone talking to me. I was so embarrassed so I went outside to get my stuff together. After lunch, I went back in to talk to the director and we ended up sorting everything out. They agreed to let me spend 2 or three hours a day working with Teri and the rest of the day I would help out with activities and work on my project. Everything worked itself out. I just wish I didn't freak out as much as I did.
What strikes me the most about my workplace is how passionate all of the employees are. They are so dedicated to providing quality care for all of the patients and residents. Carlsbad By The Sea is a five star facility and I believe this is because of the employees. They work tirelessly and selflessly to create a healthy environment. What strikes me most about the job that I am doing is how much I am appreciated. The residents are always so happy to see me, even though they do not really know me or remember me. I get unlimited hugs all day and it always lifts my spirits. I am excited about working more with the residents, I hope to read to them and listen to their life's stories as well as learn from their experiences. During this internship, I really need to be social and professional. I do a lot of talking and chatting and I need to present myself well to be well-liked. After a long, difficult search for the perfect internship, I finally found one that I am excited about. I will be going to Carlsbad By The Sea rehabilitation center. It also doubles as a senior retirement facility. My mentor is registered nurse, Teri Latasa. I will be assisting her in her daily work as a nurse. She works in the rehab center for patients that are currently recovering from surgeries or that just need to rebuild their strength. Also, I will participate and help out with the activities and I will be working on a project that I will talk bout in a later post. I am really excited about having the opportunity to make many new friends. I will be working closely with all of the residents whom are mostly over the age of 90. I am nervous about the patients liking me. I am scared that something will go wrong on my first day.
I am currently in the process of searching for an internship. I have a few leads that I am very interested in but as the days go by, I get nervous that I will not be able to find an internship. The first opportunity I chased after was an internship at JCVI Lab in La Jolla. After spending career day there, it became my dream to intern there. I applied for the program but unfortunately, I was not admitted. Dealing with rejection is difficult, but I decided to lift my chin up and keep pushing forward.
Starting from scratch is difficult, but I had a few strategies in mind. First, I thought of another field I would be interested in. The first thing that came to mind was my mom's old occupation. She used to work for a sports agent. Then, I tried to think of as many people as I could that currently worked in the industries I was interested in. I then narrowed down my list and began contacting. The first to reply was not able to offer me an internship, but she did suggest a few other places that could be potential internships. After hearing this, I immediately started doing researches on these two places. One was Wasserman sports agency, and the other is Raen Optics. I would be thrilled to have either of these opportunities. Moving Forward: I have yet to hear from either of these potential leads. I have contacted both and I have seem to hit a dead end. I plan on sending another email to each of them. After that, I will probably start from scratch again and try to find more contacts. As internship nears, it is stressful trying to find one that suits me. It is difficult to stay positive, but I know I will be able to pull through. |
